Spring is in the air

Although Spring is around the corner, we are starting to see some cases of influenza (flu).

SIGN AND SYMPTOMS INCLUDE:

1.  Fever or feeling feverish/chills

2.  Coughing and/or sore throat

3.  Runny or stuffy nose

4.  Headaches and/or body aches

5.  Fatigue

6.  Some people may have vomitting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

Steps to protect yourself from getting the flu:

  • Get vaccinated
  • Wash your hands often
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Limit your contact with others that may be sick
  • Get plenty of rest

Treatment:

The flu is caused by a virus, therefore antibiotics usually do not play a role in treating the flu. Supportive care is usually all that is needed, with fluids and fever reduction medication (ie Tylenol & motrin). Antiviral medication may also be used if started within 48 hrs of symptom onset. Antiviral medication can make your illness milder and help you feel better faster.
